Bundu/ Sowei Helmet Mask
- for Sande society
- made by male carver but worn by a female masker
- for girls inititation (Mende people,others) (in forest instructed on how to be good wives)
- mimic mask in adult live:eyes be reserved, small mouth keep closed don't gossip, small ears not to listen to gossip (silent teaching:dancing, raise kids, cook)
- mask is female spirit praised from bottom of rivers and lake
- Girls exposed to different messages when appropriate
Female (PWO) Mask (Chokwe peoples)
- Mask danced by male dancer and carved by male
- represents ideal women
- honor women young fertile successful given birth
- Matrilineal family line pass down through mother
- recognize founding female ancestor of the Chokwe lineage
Mask (Buk) Torres Strait, Mabuiag Island
- Divided in three (bottom: human face, above: face and body of bird, uptop: feathers)
- used in mascaraed
- feathers, shell and raffia add texture
- turtle shell trade early 1800s
- late 1800s present of missionary burned mask to destroy them
I liked how detail and descriptive the videos were, it was so much information i didn't know which to write down as a concept. The videos add depth to the readings because it support more about the mask being for rituals and performances, and the piece of the masks were very detailed and backs up the art concepts.
